Q: What does Thermage® feel like?

A: With each touch of the Thermage® tip, patients will experience a cooling, and then brief deep heating as the radiofrequency energy is delivered to their skin and underlying tissues. This deep heating sensation is the indication that their collagen is reaching effective temperatures for tightening. To protect the skin and make the treatment more comfortable the surface of the skin is cooled before, during and after each deliverance of energy. The physician or nurse controls the amount of energy delivered to balance comfort with maximum results.

Q: Do you use a topical or oral pain medication?

A: A topical pain medication is not used because it eliminates the cooling sensation from the tip. Most patients tolerate the treatment well without any oral relaxants and are able to return immediately to their usual daily activities.

Q: How does Thermage® work?

A: The Thermage procedure works by heating up deep collagen fibers in the skin and underlying tissue, while protecting the skins surface with a cooling spray. A hand piece delivers a controlled amount of radiofrequency energy deep beneath the skin with each touch of the treatment tip. This deep uniform heating causes the existing collagen to tighten and new collagen to be created in response to the deep heating process.

Q: What Kind of Results can I expect?

A: Everyone can expect some level of collagen tightening. The visible improvement varies from subtle to dramatic depending upon your body’s response to the radiofrequency energy. Generally some tightening is noticed immediately with continued improvement over the six months following treatment as the new collagen is formed. Patients experience overall tighter skin, smoother skin, contouring along the jaw line, softening of wrinkles around the mouth and forehead as well as tightening of the loose skin under the chin.

Q: How long before I can return to normal activities?

A: Immediately. Patients do not require any special after care following a Thermage treatment. Some patients experience mild redness, but it commonly disappears quickly. As always, sunscreen should be worn.
