BOTOX® Cosmetic was FDA approved in 2002 for the temporary reduction of moderate to severe frown lines. Since then it has become the most popular physician administered aesthetic procedure in the United States according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Over 3.3 million treatments were performed in 2005.

BOTOX® Cosmetic treats wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. As we age we begin to get creases, also know as wrinkles in our skin. The areas of the face associated with facial expression are often the first areas to show these creases because the muscles under the skin are continually “creasing” the skin during expression. Because these wrinkles are based upon muscle movement they are considered “dynamic” wrinkles and can be effectively treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic. BOTOX® Cosmetic relaxes these muscles therefore diminishing the wrinkles.

Q: What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

A: BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein derived from Clostridium Botulinum bacterium. This protein is injected directly into the muscles that cause wrinkles. This causes the muscle over the next few days to relax, resulting in a decrease in the wrinkle.

Q: How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?

A: When injected into a muscle, BOTOX® Cosmetic diminishes that muscle’s ability to contract. The muscle usually relaxes within a few days after being injected. Patient’s results last for approximately four months following treatment.

Q: What is the difference between BOTOX® Cosmetic and Cosmetic Fillers?

A: BOTOX® Cosmetic relaxes the muscle causing a wrinkle. Cosmetic fillers are used to fill a space where volume has been lost thus causing a wrinkle or fold.

Q: What is the treatment like?

A: A BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is minimally invasive due to the fact that it is a series of injections. The injections are given with an extremely fine needle directly into the muscle. No anesthesia is required, although some patients may choose to numb the area with ice prior to treatment. Many patients compare the sensation of the injection to an insect bite.

A: Patients can expect to see results within days, in some cases it may take up to one week. Although results may vary, most patients can expect results to last for 4 months.
